Creating Distinctive
Decor

How do you go about creating distinctive decor in any room, let alone your entire home? The first question a homeowner should ask themselves is "Can I live with it?" Remember, this is your home, not just the showcase of your tastes and interests. But there’s no reason it can’t be both if some time and thought goes into what is used to create and set the mood.

The next issue is whether or not what you would like to have and what is already in place, such as paint, paper, carpets, flooring and even light fixtures, will work in synch. The best course is to start from the bottom up, and when building a home, or renovating a new purchase, plan your decorating around the structure and layout of the rooms, as well as other things like natural light, or the lack thereof.

It’s a tried and true maxim, that you only get one chance to make a first impression. When it comes to your home, that first impression is made as soon as someone opens the door and steps inside. While decorating a foyer or reception area may seem pointless beyond the basic necessities, in reality it’s the first contact between you and any guests or visitors, as well as being the area where someone may have to wait.

Given that, it pays to turn your attention to what this area of the home says to you, and about you. Start by giving some consideration to whether you need to lighten the environment with paler colors and less wood because it is short on natural light. If it is already light and you want to tone that down, you may want to move from a black and white domino floor tile to a natural hardwood, replacing moldings and other framework to match.

Once the setting is ready, it’s time to move in the pieces that will create an ambience that not only welcomes others, but is one that you take pleasure in seeing as you pass through on the way out, or open the door to, on coming home.

Beautiful wall fountains
One of the most striking additions to a space of this type is a wall fountain. While classic Greek statuary is not as stylish as it used to be, there are interior wall fountains that will pick up and carry this theme for you, if you really want it to. On the other hand, an outstanding piece like the classic Nojoqui Falls slate wall fountain is versatile enough to become a part of almost any type of décor, particularly those that favor modern influences. The Rajah slate has a fabulous variation of color, while the top and bottom being made from copper, retains its warmth and patina. Lit from above, the fountain provides not only a soft, diffused glow, but a continual flow of both water and sound for the dual benefits of moisture added to the air, and sound therapy.

An oasis of greenery is always a warm and inviting setting, and can be achieved by either building planters into the design, or using movable pots and basins. Plants enhance the relaxing atmosphere created by your fountain, and you are free to add a few carefully chosen pieces of sculpture to complete the look, the number depending on your space and the size of each statue.

Bronze is a material that never goes out of style, and with Americana being a popular subject, offers such magnificent pieces as The End of the Trail, or Coming Through the Rye, both classic representations of the Old West. A singular commemorative sculpture such as Lady Justice, a limited edition statue can also provide a distinctive focal point when displayed on a pedestal or side table in front of a mirror.
